I live in rural Iowa. As everybody is aware, the midwest is effing cold. Tonight and tomorrow are supposed to be the worst. My wife asks me today how hard it would be to install block heaters, and if she bought them, if I would put them in today.

We had this conversation last year after her truck didnt want to start in cold weather. I reminded her this summer.

Maybe your friend with the Ferrari can come over. That car will heat up the whole block!

I'm in western SD myself and have looked into them. Is a 300 watt heater (the kind that sticks on magnetically) even good enough? Cold is one thing, but we have constant 25-40 mph winds (-1° with -50° windchill today). My montero is parked outside and starts fine enough I guess. I thought about a battery thermal wrap that plugs in and gets heated but I'm not sure if it's worth it.

I have been meaning to install one of these, but have not yet. It is purchased, but not installed, it heats the engine coolant/ antifreeze.

Lots of misunderstandings when it comes to wind-chill. Your car/machine only is affected by the temperature. Exposed skin, and the drying effect that wind has on it, is what wind chill is all about.

Use one of those temperature surface thermometers to check the temperature of the outside of your car, it will never be colder than the "actual" temperature, regardless of wind speed.

I figure the wind would pull whatever heat it built away though. I guess it can't hurt though.

Wind will get things to the actual temperature more quickly but that is all.
